San Francisco and Marin CA
It’s hard not to notice an attractive smile with pearly white teeth that are perfectly straight and evenly sized. Celebrities, influencers, and friends and neighbors often flash aesthetically pleasing smiles that catch the eye and may make you ponder how they achieved their look. While orthodontics can be attributed to many of those gorgeous smiles, that’s not the only way to get a Hollywood smile. Veneers have become one of dentistry’s most popular treatments, and for good reasons. Today on the blog, our cosmetic dentists in Marin at Glen Park Dental share the ultimate guide to getting dental veneers.
Veneers and how they work
Veneers are thin shells of porcelain hand-crafted to look impeccably natural in shade, translucency, shape, and size. Made too thick and veneers look chunky and unnatural. But made with ultimate craftsmanship and design, veneers look like you were born to have naturally perfect teeth. Veneers are permanently bonded to the front side of your teeth. With good care and maintenance, veneers should last a decade. They are ideal for patients with slight tooth imperfections like teeth that are crooked, overlapping, chipped, discolored, uneven, or otherwise imperfect. While veneers cannot alter the alignment of your teeth, they can be designed to make it appear as though your teeth are straight.
How veneers are installed
It typically takes about three visits to our Marin cosmetic dental office to get the results of your new veneers. The first visit is a consultation where you meet with our dentist to discuss your smile needs. Once you decide to get veneers and how many you need, your next visit is to prep your teeth for the veneers. During this second visit, the dentist takes molds or impressions of your teeth which are later used to craft your veneers. The teeth need to be filed down slightly so that there is room for the veneers to be bonded. Then, we craft temporary veneers for you to wear while your permanent ones are made at the dental lab. You’ll return for a third visit in which we permanently bond the veneers to your teeth. The dentist checks the fit and bite to ensure they look and feel natural.
Caring for veneers
Taking care of your smile, following veneers, is as easy as caring for your regular teeth. Commit to daily oral hygiene habits like brushing twice a day and flossing daily to lower your risk of gum disease and cavities. Veneers only cover the front surface of your teeth, so you still need to practice oral hygiene every day. Additionally, see the dentist twice a year for checkups and cleanings so that we can detect any oral health concerns when they first start. Waiting until decay or pain is at its worst could result in losing a tooth and wasting money spent on your veneers.
