What to Expect Before and After Dental Implant Surgery

what to expect from dental implant surgery

San Francisco and Marin CA

Dental implant surgery is a major first step to reviving your smile, and it can be scary when you don’t know what to anticipate throughout the process. Glen Park Dental is committed to providing stellar results through implant dentistry. Our implant dentists in San Francisco will walk you through the procedure from start to finish. To assist you as you embark on your dental implant procedure, we have provided a detailed guide on the different phases of implantation and what to expect from the procedure from beginning to end.

Step 1: Book an Appointment

A first consult will be conducted to determine if dental implants are right for you. We will examine your oral and overall health, which may include X-rays and analyzing your medical history. Extra dental procedures may be needed, depending on your oral health status. Additional procedures may include gum disease treatment, tooth extractions, or bone graphs. However, some patients won’t qualify for dental implants because of weak jaws needed to hold on to the implant and make it stable. Always be sure that you undergo a consultation when considering implants, to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Step 2: Teeth Extraction and Bone Grafting

Our Marin area implant dentists will then conduct any procedures needed to prepare a patient’s jaw for implant placement. When bone loss occurs, then it would be either possible or necessary to carry out a bone graft to rebuild the jawbone and support the implant. The recovery time from a bone graft is 3 to 6 months depending on the damage extent and the progress of regenerated bone.

Step 3: Make Plans

Planning for surgery a few weeks in advance is key to ensuring a smooth implant procedure and recovery process. Stock up on foods that are nutritious but easy to chew because you may need to take it easy for a few days, in terms of chewing. Most patients who receive a single implant return to work the next day, although plan to take some time off if you’re receiving multiple implants or if the dentist advises you to do so.

Step 4: Implant Day

Arrive for your appointment on implant day with an empty stomach, wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Before your procedure, you can brush your teeth as usual, but avoid using mouthwash. Then, take any preoperative medications as directed by our Marin implant dentists and our dental team to help ensure a smooth and successful implant placement. Finally, our team will go to work inserting the implants.
