San Francisco and Marin CA
At Glen Park Dental, we believe in the mouth-body connection. That means that good oral health is a key component of your overall wellness. In fact, did you know that common dental issues such as tooth decay and gum disease can elevate your risk of chronic and even life-threatening conditions such as cardiac disease, diabetes and dementia? Now for the good news: following a simple regimen of care can keep you on course for good oral health. Today on the blog, we take a look at four habits that are crucial to your oral hygiene.
Tip 1: Brush your teeth the right way and twice a day
Cleaning your teeth correctly does not mean they need to be scrubbed hard or with a hard-bristled brush, either of which actually can damage your teeth and gums. Instead, use a soft-bristled brush and spend at least two minutes cleaning your teeth by using the brush in a gentle, circular motion. Make sure to use the brush on all the surfaces of your tooth. And brush your tongue, too!
Tip 2: Floss daily
There are spots between your teeth that no toothbrush can reach. Otherwise, the bacteria and plaque can accumulate and lead to serious problems such as cavities and gum disease. While you can floss at any time of day that is convenient for you, we recommend doing it right before bed. Has it been a while since you flossed? If so, you might see some bleeding from your gums. They will adjust soon; just keep up the habit.
Tip 3: Use a prebiotic mouth rinse
Ongoing research shows that traditional mouthwashes can be less helpful for the oral microbiome than thought in past years. Instead, incorporate a prebiotic mouth rinse, which specifically hinders the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth. Use a prebiotic rinse on the same schedule you would use a traditional, store-bought mouthwash product.
Tip 4: Visit your dentist once every six months for a checkup
All the at-home oral care can only go so far if it is not supplemented by seeing your dentist twice a year for a checkup. This appointment should include a dental cleaning and a thorough examination of your teeth and mouth. You also should have X-rays taken by your dentist at least once a year; these provide a regularly updated record of the condition of your teeth and mouth, making it easier to identify any dramatic changes.
