Sealants

sealantsSan Francisco and Marin CA

Go the extra mile to protect the oral health of your child. Let the staff at Glen Park Dental apply sealants, which provide an additional barrier against cavities and tooth decay.

What is a sealant?

A sealant is a coating that is applied to the chewing surface of the back teeth—usually molars and bicuspids, which children often have difficulty brushing well enough. A sealant bonds into the existing grooves on the surfaces of teeth, forming a protective barrier that hinders the accumulation of bacteria, which is the initial building block of tooth decay.

Are sealants safe?

Yes. All sealants used at Glen Park Dental are made of a non-toxic material.

Are sealants right for my child?

The dental professionals at Glen Park Dental recommend applying sealants to permanent teeth soon after they erupt. Sealants can be applied to baby teeth, but the pediatric dentists at Glen Park Dental will evaluate these situations on an individual, case-by-case basis.

How long will a sealant last?

Usually, the lifespan of a sealant treatment is between 3 and 5 years, although there are documented cases of an applied sealant remaining effective even into adulthood. Parents can do their part to prolong the effectiveness of a sealant treatment by discouraging their children from negative oral habits such as chewing ice, popcorn kernels, or other inanimate objects, as well as sticky candies. During your child’s routine dental checkups, we will ensure the sealants are still intact or replace them if necessary.

Remember, sealants do not completely prevent decay and should never be considered a substitute for regular brushing and flossing. Parents should continue to make appointments for their children with their pediatric dentist at least twice per year for a professional cleaning and an examination of their oral health.

A sealant will help safeguard your child against the hazards of tooth decay, which the most widespread chronic disease that affects American youth.
