7 Tips to Improve your Sleep

improve sleep

San Francisco and Marin CA

You can watch your diet, exercise and refrain from harmful habits like smoking and drinking alcohol. However, to be at your best physically and mentally, you need to be sure you get the proper amount of sleep. Approximately one-third of the American population deals with issues that hinder the quality of their sleep. Today on the blog, Glen Park Dental provides these seven tips that can improve your sleep.

  1. Keep it cool and dark: Your sleeping space will be more restful and soothing if it is dark and cool. Install blackout curtains or wear a sleep mask to eliminate as much light as you can. You also could turn on a fan or use a sound machine to block out distracting noises. You also will sleep better in a cool room – the target temperature should be about 65 degrees.
  2. Keep a schedule: For better sleep you should wake up at the same time every day, even on your days off. This is more valuable to your sleep than having the same bedtime every night. Maintaining such a schedule regulates your body clock and conditions your body to begin winding down in anticipation of sleep.
  3. Stick with a routine: If you do the same things before going to bed each night, this also helps train your body to begin winding down as a precursor to going to sleep. This routine may include brushing your teeth, doing some light stretching, completing your skin care regimen or preparing your sound machine and fan.
  4. Don’t take naps: You are more likely to take a nap if you do not get quality sleep overnight. However, a nap just makes it tougher to fall asleep and stay asleep at night.
  5. Splish splash: Taking a hot bath or shower before laying down can relax you. Also, your body naturally cools down afterward, which can encourage the physiological processes that initiate sleep.
  6. No screen time: The blue light from your television, computer, tablet or phone can affect your natural sleep/wake cycle. Avoid exposure to blue light from screens for at least an hour before going to bed.
  7. Undergo a screening for sleep apnea: Obstructive sleep apnea affects millions of Americans. Someone with this sleep breathing disorder experiences blockages of the airway that may impede or totally interrupt airflow. These airway blockages greatly affect the quality of your sleep, as someone with sleep apnea experiences frequent disruptions in the sleep cycle that mean they spend less time in the deepest stages of sleep, which are so important to restoring both the mind and the body. Sleep apnea is a serious medical condition that will not go away on its own; you must receive diagnosis and treatment from a qualified medical professional.
